a case study
Here’s an example of what it might cost to set up a publishing company
and publish your first book:
| File a fictitious business name statement with your city or county | $ 35 |
| Publish an announcement of your fictitious business name | $ 50 |
| Rent a Post Office Box | $ 50 |
| Buy 10 ISBNs | $250 |
| Have your book designed | ? |
| Upload your files to Lightning Source | $105 |
| Upload a revised interior file to Lightning Source | $ 40 |
The total, not including your book design: |
$ 555 |
The costs of book design are discussed elsewhere on this website, but here’s a brief synopsis.
The interior will cost between $3 and $5 per page, so a 300-page book will be between $900 and $1500.
The cover will cost from a low of $500 for a basic cover up to the sky’s the limit.
If you decide to learn to do these jobs yourself, the software (typesetting program for the interior and graphics software for the cover) can cost between $1000 and $2000. There are free programs you can use. Some people have used Word with some success. Check our resources pages for where to find out more information.
