What do we do?
We convert your digital file, either a word processing file or a file exported to PDF or HTML, to almost any ebook format you need.
Kindle
Most of the conversions we do are for the Kindle format. Books with few illustrations and no special formatting can be done for as little as $100.
Special formatting
If your book contains elements that require special formatting (poetry, quotations, tables, Q&A, etc.), we'll be happy to give you an estimate once we've had a look at your file.
What's included
Included in our Kindle conversion service are these enhancements:
- If your book has a "designed" title page and/or half-title page, using images, special fonts, special layout, etc., we will create a sized and optimized image for the ebook, to preserve these design elements, so that your ebook title page will look like the title page in your book.
- If your book has other "designed" pages, such as a dedication, an acknowledgements page, an "also by" page that includes cover images of your other books, we will create a sized and optimized image for these pages on request.
- We will format your chapter titles as closely as possible to how they appear in your book.
- We will do a thorough spellcheck of your file in order to find errors introduced by the conversion process (paragraph breaks where they shouldn't be, no paragraph breaks where they should be, words run together, etc.).
- We will create a linked Table of Contents that will appear in the Kindle menu.
- We will create a "start" point that will appear as the "Go to the Beginning" item in the Kindle menu.
- We will add all appropriate metadata to the ebook file.
If you have your book in multiple formats, we'd love to have them all. If you have a pdf of your paperback, we can use that to try to match the formatting as much as possible. If you also have a word processing file, we'd like that too. A word processing file will convert more cleanly than a pdf.
The files you submit should be files that are ready for publication. The spellcheck process done after the file conversion is only for catching errors resulting from the conversion process, not for fixing up typos and grammatical errors that exist in the original file. If you find any of those, we can fix them, but it will cost extra.
Ideally, once the conversion is done, the book should be read on the device or devices for which it is intended. There are ways to simulate on a computer what the ebook will look like, but there is no substitute for seeing it on the actual device. We preview all our work on the Kindle 3, the Kindle Fire, and the Kindle app for iPad.
Complications
Sometimes all the author has is a pdf file made from the scanned pages of a book. This results in a file that consists entirely of images. In order to create flowable text, we will need to apply OCR (Optical Character Recognition). OCR can introduce many typos, such as the letters rn (r and n) that may convert to the letter m, the letter l that may convert to the number 1, etc. We go through the file using spellcheck in order to find as many of these errors as we can, but we seldom find them all, so we leave it to you to do a thorough proofread of your file. The OCR process adds $50 to the fee, but we'll fix all the typos you find for free.
ePub
Once we have converted your book to HTML, as we do for the Kindle conversion, it's a simple matter to convert it to ePub, which we will do for an additional $25. Otherwise, our basic charge for ePub conversion is $100, and works pretty much like our Kindle conversion service described above.
